Dress for two climates in one day

A Charyn-and-lakes day covers a hot, exposed canyon and cooler, higher mountain lakes, sometimes hours apart, so the trick is layers. Bring sun protection — hat, sunglasses, high-SPF sunscreen — for the shadeless canyon walk, plus a warm layer or light jacket for the lakes, which sit higher and can feel markedly cooler, especially early or late in the season. Dressing for only one of the two environments is the most common mistake, and there's no shop to fix it once you're on the road.

Footwear and the walking

None of the walking is technical, but the canyon descent and climb back out are on loose, uneven ground, and the lake shores can be muddy, so proper closed shoes with grip beat sandals here. The Valley of Castles walk down to the river and back is the main effort of the day; it's manageable for most reasonably active visitors, but the uphill return in the heat is the part to respect. If you have knee or mobility concerns, factor that climb in before choosing the full itinerary.

Water, snacks and lunch

Carry plenty of water — the canyon is hot and exposed and there's little to buy along the way. Lunch is often a pay-on-site extra rather than included, and options en route are limited, so bring snacks even if a meal stop is planned. A few high-energy snacks and more water than you think you'll need will carry you comfortably through a day that runs many hours longer than a normal outing.

The UAZ leg and rough roads

The final approach to Kaindy Lake is usually done in a Soviet-era UAZ four-wheel-drive over a rough track, and even the main drives include stretches of bumpy regional road. It's part of the adventure rather than a problem, but if you're prone to motion sickness it's worth coming prepared, and anything you're carrying should be in a bag that can take some jostling. Don't expect polished coach comfort on the off-road sections — that's simply not how these places are reached.

Cash, timing and stamina

Bring some local currency (tenge) in cash for the extras that aren't usually included — lunch, the horseback ride at Kolsai, any boat — since card payment can't be relied on out here. Beyond the kit, the main thing to pack is stamina and patience: this is a long day with a lot of driving between short, high-value stops. Go in expecting a big, full outing rather than a leisurely one, and the length becomes part of the experience instead of a surprise.
